What Is “Financial Freedom”, Exactly?

Expressions like “Financial Freedom” are being thrown about a lot by self-styled success gurus on the internet. What do they even mean?

As a Coach, I know how important it is to gain clarity before even starting out on the journey towards a goal. Therefore, I’m going to give you exact definitions of some of the most frequently used terms, and then I’m going to suggest a few strategies on how to start moving towards that beautiful state where you control your money, rather than letting it control you.

Financial Security

We’ll start out with the minimum, which is Financial Security. This is defined as having a sum set aside – such as, in a savings account – which will cover your (and your family’s or other dependents’) living costs for at least six months. In other words, you’ll be able to cover your bills and survive.

This is important in the case of loss of income.

How To Make Good Choices

There’s a book by Brian Klemmer titled “If How Tos Were Enough, We Would All Be Skinny, Rich And Happy”. He has a point – experts might argue about the details, but we all have at least a rough idea of what foods are good for you, that exercise is important, and that we need to save money in order to be wealthy. Many of us have at times entered into relationships that weren’t good for us, and we knew they weren’t, but we did it anyway.

Yet I titled this article “How To”. I did it because I don’t intend to write about what foods to eat, what exercise to take up, or what choices to make in other parts of your life. There’s no need to write about these things because frankly, we all KNOW, don’t we? Knowledge is not the problem. The problem is, at least sometimes, putting that knowledge into practice – or stopping ourselves from acting in way that are bad for us, although we know better.

It’s one of the areas where Coaching shines. That’s because of its powerful, transformative tools and the way a Coach will hold you accountable from one session to the next. These things make it much easier to truly change one’s ways, to establish new habits and stick with them in the long term.

An article can’t possibly provide these things, but I’m going to try and give you a few things you can work on if you so choose. They will make it easier to do the things which are good for you in the future.

Your Wild Creation

Why am I harping on about “the Wild”? Why did I rename my business “Wild Spirits Coaching”? What’s all this got to do with you, your life in the civilised world, your unglamorous daily chores and the decidedly un-wild bills you pay?

All these are fair questions. Indeed our lives these days hardly resemble those of our long-gone ancestors whose daily struggle with nature’s powers was at the basis of their survival. They were, however, our ancestors, that’s undeniable. And they were the ones who first expressed creativity, decorating caves and later stone houses, building in elaborate forms, adorning weapons, and chiselling statues. They told stories, and at some point, someone thought of a way to record those stories by writing them down. Much later, even audio recordings became possible, eventually visual too.

In short, our first creative roots are in the Wild.

Call Of The Wild

What does “the Wild” mean to you?

A lot of people actually have negative associations. Remember the movie “Wild at Heart”? Not a nice view on what “wild” means at all. I considered these things when I rebranded my business, but in the end I realised that if “wild” means something beautiful and empowering to me, it would be likely to attract clients who resonate with me.

I’ve been fascinated with the concept of the Wild for many years, which you’ll know if you’ve ever looked at the articles section of my personal website. I also asked many friends to give me their own definitions. In the following, I’ll give you a list of the most frequent associations, and how they can apply to you and your own life. As always, not all of it will be relevant to you so simply take what sings to you and leave the rest.

The terms in question are: Free, exuberant, whole, unashamed.

Life Is Too Short For TV

It’s the 1st of August, and there are five months left to 2016. Have you reviewed your goals for the year lately? How are you faring?

I’ll start with a disclaimer: Yes, there are times when holding back and waiting are actually appropriate, for a time. If you are saving up for something, or anticipating a particular day when things will happen, it can be appropriate to hold back, rest, and conserve your energies.

At all other times, though, holding still and NOT living your passions and dreams, are a waste of precious, irretrievable life time. You may be telling yourself your “time has not there yet” and that you “need to get some money first” (or whatever else it is you perceive to be missing), but the truth is, time will continue to pass and unless you make changes, your financial situation is going to change as little as the rest of your life – or it’s going to change only by chance, by default, not by your doing.

The impulse to act

When I was stuck in inertia, uncertain of my own capability and unable to rely on my ailing body, I asked every inner and spiritual guide what to do. One day, the answer came clearly:

“Get up, get going, and get a life.”

That’s when I set things in motion. I know I needed the impulse to take action, so what I’m attempting to do here is give you that same impulse. Enough with the wait! The circumstances will never be just right, so now is as good a time as any to take steps.
