Find “Your Thing” Through Alignment

Abstract:

Let me start by asking a few hard questions.

Are you living, or just existing? Is life an exciting journey with you at the steering wheel, or are you drifting along and only hope you’ll arrive somewhere unscathed?

How about decisions: Are you good at making them? Do you sometimes worry if you’re on the right path in life? Do you wish there was some guidance, a way to know for sure?

Today’s mission is for you to establish a surefire guiding system through your life, and towards finding “your thing”.

Task 1: What matters to you?

The magical guiding system is called your values. Now, unlike your beliefs, which are acquired throughout your life and can be changed, values are at the core of your being. They are who you are at the deepest level.

Start by looking at a list of values such as this one, and write down those that spontaneously speak to you. You can add others that aren’t on the list.

Then narrow down the list until you’re left with ca. 5 top values.

Task 2: Practise alignment

Get comfortable and take stock of your life. Is it aligned with your values? You can look at things such as your job, your relationships, the way you live, where you live and with whom. Also include your passion(s).

Now determine which adjustments you need. Being out of alignment with your values can have serious consequences, so do whatever it takes to fix any issues.

Task 3: Find “your thing”

This task is about making it a habit to check everything against your values. Not sure if you should accept the job offer? Check if the work is aligned with your values. Facing a difficult decision? Check which option is more aligned with your values.

Values are a reliable compass through life. This applies to your passions as well, and if you use it consistently, it’ll light the way to “your thing” – your purpose.

Understand The Woo-Woo: What’s Your Purpose Really?

Abstract:

It’s always the next project: get the kid through primary school, or into the school of their choice, or on the team they want to be at, get the job I want, the relationship of my dreams…

Goals are great. I always recommend having goals in every part of your life. But when you hustle and hustle towards short-term goals all the time, there comes a point when you stop and ask yourself: What’s it all for? What’s the bigger picture?

This is where purpose comes in.

Task 1: Spot the purpose

When we hear purpose, we think of people with a mission. People who drop everything to build schools in a poor country. People who change the world.

They definitely all have a purpose, but it’s not the only way to have one. Everyone has a purpose, but many don’t know they do because they think if it doesn’t at least solve world hunger, it can’t be a purpose.

Task 2: Find your purpose

There are three steps to this process, or three levels of insight:

  1. Check philosophy and religions: at the root, they’re about love. Living in love, spreading love in the world and the behaviour that follows (such as helping each other, ethics etc).
  2. Passion and purpose are connected – this is my work – but that doesn’t mean your passion is necessarily your purpose. Passion leads to purpose, in that it lights you up. When you’re on fire with joy, you’re in a high vibration energetically, and this matches the vibration of purpose and will make you attract it.
  3. Remember you already know your purpose (love). Your task is to spend as much time in a high vibration as possible, by pursuing your passion and feeling joy and love, and your purpose will become clear – it might even change over time, but it’ll be there.

When The People Around You Just Don’t Get It

Abstract:

Years ago, long before I ever discovered Coaching, a good friend of mine trained to be a Coach. I’d just been made permanent in a job and for the first time in my life, felt the comfort of a regular salary.

She was gushing about being self-employed, while I was in a completely different place. We navigated the differences, but it often felt weird. At worst, this type of situation can feel like your environment is holding you back.

Your mission is to learn how to handle people who are in a different phase.

Task 1: Understand life’s natural cycles

To start off with, it helps to realise that life is cyclical. The seasons follow each other; no tree blossoms all year around. Similarly, we go through phases of passion and joy, energy and enthusiasm, followed by quieter periods of “maintenance”. There are even periods where we’re distracted, where life just happens and demands our attention elsewhere.

Realise that the other person might not be in the same phase. This also helps you have more compassion with yourself when you’re less motivated. Your passion might require consistency, but don’t expect yourself to be equally motivated all the time. Simply develop the dedication needed to stick with it through the hard times.

Task 2: Sanitise your environment

At the same time, if someone around you is openly negative or ridicules you, it can seriously impact your progress and your happiness. Call it out in a non-confrontational way; tell them how their attitude makes you feel.

If nothing changes, you need, for your own sanity, remove yourself from their influence. If you can’t kick them out of your life altogether, create pockets of alone time for yourself where you can pursue your passion. Talk about other things; don’t confide in them concerning the phase you’re in.

Protect your space, but be understanding, too. We all walk our own paths.

What They Don’t Tell You About The Path To Your Dreams

Abstract:

Your mission today is to a. learn about, and b. arm yourself against what they don’t tell you about the path to your dreams.

Even positive changes take time to implement, and things will happen along the way. Here’s how to prepare yourself.

1. Task: Your passion

Take a moment to picture yourself pursuing your passion(s). Get into the emotion of doing what lights you up, feel that bliss.

Done? Good!

2. Task: What could go wrong?

Now please imagine, in great detail, what life would need to throw at you to stop you pursuing your passion.

The point is that with every positive change, an equal negative force is bound to show up. It’s a law of nature. However, what you just imagined probably won’t happen, because usually the curveball is something you didn’t see coming at all.

This doesn’t mean that your passion isn’t what you’re supposed to do, though. Life is just testing your resolve. I keep seeing it: People who stick with it through the challenge, come out even more blissful than before.

Your dreams

Archery – this is yours truly!

3. Task: Your commitment

The other thing to be prepared for is your passion feeling stale at times. You won’t always make progress. At times, you’re just not feeling it any longer. I promise you the buzz will return, but you need to stick with it!

Your task is to get into the habit of pursuing your passion. Write down one small thing you’ll do this week, one practice, or one hour of doing what lights you up. Next week, review and re-commit – either to the same task or a new one.

4. Task: Let me know

I’d love to hear how your commitment is going, so please reply to today’s newsletter email and let me know! And if you’re not subscribed yet, you can do so above.

Create Your Legacy

Abstract:

As a multipassionate, I used to have trouble deciding on what to do with my life. I seemed to drift from one thing to the next, never truly settling for anything. I come across this dilemma with many of my clients as well, especially the multipassionates.

Stephen Covey recommends to “Begin with the end in mind” when you create your legacy. He suggests to put into writing what you’d like people to say about you at your funeral, in a eulogy. I remember learning a similar exercise in my Coaching studies.

Why think about a legacy?

Life’s full of distraction. There are books and media, movies and TV programme, hobbies, friends… And of course, work and family are enough to fill every hour of every day in and of themselves.

The issue with this is that “busy” doesn’t necessarily imply doing anything meaningful. Often enough, we’re just wasting time with, well, busy work, instead of working on leaving the world a better place. What you should be doing is create your legacy.

Finding your “Thing”

I recommend you take some time to actually write down your thoughts on this. It might seem a little morbid to you to think of your funeral, so if you like, call it the impact you’d like to make on this world in your life.

If you’re still having trouble, find out what people already say about you. Ask five of your closest friends what they think your “thing” is. Ask yourself if you’re happy with their answers, and if you aren’t, it’s time to make changes.

Clarity comes first. It acts like a compass in the midst of life’s distractions, and it’ll take you back, time and time again, to what really matters and the legacy you’d like to leave behind.
