The Biological Reason Why We Don’t Have Time


 

Abstract:
 

Let me start by saying that yes, we DO have time. There are a few of us who really are busy every minute of every day, but they’re in the minority.
 

When we count the hours we spend on sleep, household and other chores, and work, we’re usually left with an astonishingly – and frankly, embarrassingly – large number of hours of “free time”. How come we never have any left?
 

There’s a biological reason for this, in fact! Your mission today is to learn about this reason, and learn how to outsmart your own brain.

Task 1: Why you don’t have time

 

The largest part of our brains could be called the rational brain. It’s for reasoning, making decisions, logic. However, the most powerful, because oldest part (from the standpoint of evolution) is the limbic brain, which could be called the emotional brain.
 

The rational brain tells you that you need to get the housework done so you can pursue your passion. The limbic brain has no concept of time and seduces you to scroll through Facebook instead or spend the evening on the couch watching Netflix.
 

Get it? The limbic brain doesn’t understand time, it only understands emotion. It’s like a little child that wants everything now. To try and overrule it with your rational brain is like fighting a war against yourself.

Task 2: Work with your brain, not against it

 

To counteract this, you need to get on your limbic brain’s good side. Feed it plenty of emotional rewards. This is why you need to prioritise your passion!
 

When you feel compelled to watch a movie instead of painting, dig for the emotion behind this impulse. What’s your limbic brain trying to feel? Maybe it’s cosiness and comfort. Give that to yourself through Self Care. Then surprise the limbic brain with the joy of pursuing your passion.

What To Do If Time Gets Away From You


 

Abstract:
 

My clients often tell me that they should have more time left outside of work, sleeping, housework etc, to pursue their passion. But in reality, it never seems to work out that way.
 

This is very common! Your mission today is to understand how time gets away from you, and to learn how to actually use this to further the pursuit of your passion or passions.

Task 1: Understand that you’re not lazy

 

Practically all of my clients think they’re lazy. I used to think this of myself as well. It’s a fairly universal misconception, because it’s quite simply untrue!
 

We come to this conclusion because of two things:
 

  1. We might be “wasting” time watching Netflix or just vegging out on the couch, or scrolling through social media endlessly.
  2.  

  3. Especially creatives tend to spend time “daydreaming”, scribbling or doodling, dropping one project to start (yet) another, and having long periods of time that are seemingly unproductive.

Task 2: Use your patterns

 

This is about looking at what you do in those periods that make you call yourself “lazy”, and use this to your advantage. Here are examples according to my points in the first task.
 

  1. If you’re spending too much time on social media or binge-watching TV series, it’s a sign of mental overload. In our day and age, we may no longer do back-breaking physical work, but we’re mentally overstimulated and fatigued.
  2.  

    If this is what you do, find another way to get downtime. Don’t judge or compare yourself, just give yourself the gift of self care. Do nothing at all, or do a yoga class, meditation, a walk in nature – whatever you need to get back into balance.
     

  3. If you spend time idling and wool-gathering as a creative, recognise this as part of the creative process. It’s not linear, it needs “gestational periods” of seemingly low productivity. Allow yourself these time periods, schedule them in, and use them to further your creative inspiration.

The Secret To Getting More Time

Jim Rohn said: “Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you can’t get more time.” Time’s also the subject cited most often – more than money – as a reason why people say they can’t prioritise their passions, or get coaching, or get healthy, you name it.
 

There are many time management systems, and I’ve studied a lot of them. A few parts of each have stuck, but there’s only one insight which has made all the difference. Let me explain.

Why time management fails

 

The issue with most time management systems is that life isn’t predictable or linear. You can plan your day minutely, but then life just happens and throws everything over. The nature of life runs contrary to strict planning.
 

Some systems take this into account, though. Instead of planning a day by a schedule, they suggest setting priorities first and fitting in less important tasks around them. This leads to the insight that once the important things are taken care of, there’s always more time for the rest.
 

Time is relative: how “long” an hour is, depends on your perception of it.

Passions first

 

To help people put this insight into practice, is my life’s work and purpose. It literally changes the world by shifting people’s focus from necessities and fear to desires and pleasure. However, people tend to fear that pursuing their passion won’t leave time for anything else.
 

In reality, the opposite is the case: Once your passions are the first priority in your life, and you make room for them and put them above everything else, you’ll find that time seems to expand. This is where the subjective, relative perception of time comes in. There’s more than enough room for everything when you’re in your “zone” and joyful.

How To Get Shit Done

Before I say anything else: From today’s title, you may have noticed that I do use adult language occasionally! Just a fair warning in case that’s not your thing.
 

A lot of my Coaching clients feel they should be doing more and that they fall short somehow. It seems to be an almost universal feeling. In some cases, trying too hard to get shit done even leads to complete inertia.

Getting real

 

Most people have completely unrealistic expectations of themselves. They think if they don’t “function” perfectly and are productive every minute of every day, then they’re doing it wrong.
 

As a first step, realise that you’re not a machine, and neither are you supposed to be. It’s simply not how humans work! Stop measuring yourself against others and putting pressure on yourself.
 
 

Separating the wheat from the chaff

 

The second step is to take a good look at your life and clean it out the way you’d sort out your closet when you want to give some clothes to charity. Just like decluttering the closet, it can be hard to let go of some things. When you’ve done it, however, you feel a profound relief and clarity.
 

Focus on getting done what really matters to you: Yourself, your family and friends, your passions, and the necessities of life. Everything else gets cleared out.

Accepting your human nature

 

Step three is to accept that you’re human and to play to your strengths. Some people are “seasonal workers” while others are particularly productive at a certain time of the day. Do what works for you, and don’t forget to work in breaks and self care as well.
 

Once you’ve accomplished these three steps, you’ll feel yourself settling into your own personal rhythm. Ironically, when you stop stressing about it, you’ll not only feel happier but you’ll also “get shit done”.

When There’s Just Too Much To Do

I had the idea for a story about two years before I actually wrote it down. It wasn’t writer’s block, it was simply a matter of having too much going on to be able to focus on writing.
 

There was just too much to do all the time.

The six-months rule

 

There are, of course, times in life when things just get busy, but it happens to everyone and it’s perfectly normal because life is cyclical by nature. For example, if you just had a new baby, then you won’t have time for much else for some time.
 

However, there are some people who’ll always tell you that the stressful times are about to come to an end, and then two years later, they still have the same excuses. Don’t string yourself along like that! A good rule of thumb is that after six months’ time, things should have quietened down somewhat.
 
 

Prioritise, how?

 

To gain clarity, you need to find out what your priorities are. Sit down and ask yourself a few fundamental questions:
 

  • What’s the most important thing in my life?
  • Next: What’s urgent and unavoidable right now?
  • What’s my passion?

Write down the answers and then eliminate everything else from your life. This can be hard to do, especially when there are other things you enjoy doing, but you have to be ruthless here: Cancel, leave, say no.

Too much to do? Get support

 

The most obvious and yet overlooked strategy for coping is to ask for help, so don’t be afraid to reach out for a friend or family member. You don’t have to do it all alone! If you can afford it, get paid help as well.
 

This is your life and you’re here to do what’s important to you. Be sure you make time to actually live.
