2018 Is Your Year

Abstract:

Can you believe half of the year is already over? How did six months fly past so quickly?

Many start out a new year with resolutions, others – like me – review the past year and set their goals for the new one. In all cases, the challenge can be to follow through on all the plans and goals and truly make it “your year”. Setbacks and obstacles inevitably happen, and somewhere along the way our goals become casualties of life.

It really is never too late

If you’re on track with your year: great! It’s time for a little celebration, because six months of consistency are nothing to sneeze at. But what if you haven’t set goals or if you’re just not in a good place right now? What if you feel like you’ve screwed up?

In truth, it’s never too late. You can start setting goals, or pick up those you’ve dropped along the way, at any point. Just like a healthy-eating regime doesn’t always have to start on a Monday, you can get your life back on track any time. Decide what you want to do, and start doing it today.

Coming to grips with what’s real

I often hear from clients or friends, how they started out working on something and just then, a major catastrophe happened in their lives. If this is you, here are a few hard truths:

  1. This isn’t the exception, it’s the rule. It happens to absolutely everyone, so: “Why me?” is a pointless question.
  2. What happened doesn’t matter; what’s important is how you react to it. Do you give up or get even more determined?
  3. If you’ve already dropped the ball, forgive yourself. It happens. Stop beating yourself up and instead pick up the pieces and start working on your goal again. You can still make 2018 your year!
