Why it’s harder to find your passion as you get older
Abstract:
Why is it harder to find your passion as you get older? Is it just because people assume your passion must be something you do professionally?
Newsflash: A passion has one job, and that’s to light you up. It can be a hobby, an unusual interest, even a guilty pleasure (smutty romantasy novels, anyone?). And yet, it gets harder to find one – or several – as we get older.
Your mission today is to learn why that is so, and how to move past it.

Background: The (great) thing about getting older
I’m pro-ageing, as you probably know by now. There’s just so many advantages:
We smell a louse at a mile’s distance.
We’ve seen a lot of things and aren’t easily fazed anymore.
We know ourselves and the things and people we like.
Even being a little jaded can be an advantage: It makes it much less likely to fall for fads or false promises. But there’s also a drawback, as with most things.
It can be harder to work up real enthusiasm for something new. We might be set in our ways. We’ve experienced awful things, too, so tend to be grateful for what we have.
The secret is: You can be grateful and still remain hungry and curious about new adventures.
Task: Find your passion (or a new passion)
The thing is, there can always be more joy. More happiness. It’s not frivolous to strive for it. It’s worth it to find your passion and be swept off your feet. Just make it on your terms this time.
Consider the following:
As long as you’re breathing, you’re not too old. Nobody says you need to win the olympics. You can do the thing (whatever it is for you). Start.
If there’s something you’ve been wondering about forever, when would now be a good time to try it?
What’s the whackiest hobby you could think of? Challenge yourself to book a session or course.
Where do your thoughts go when you daydream? It’s not too embarrassing. Indulge yourself.
My challenge to you is to try a new passion within the next three days (or at least book yourself into a session or course, or buy the book, or whatever it may be). Don’t wait – do it! And let me know how it went.
